WORK & CAREERS

AI at work: the gains are not the same for everyone.

One customer support field study found an average productivity gain, with differences by experience.

Brynjolfsson, Li & Raymond · QJE, 2025

What the study found

A study of 5,172 customer support agents found that access to an AI assistant increased issues resolved per hour by 15% on average. Less experienced workers benefited more.

What it does not establish

This was one customer support setting using a specific assistant. It does not predict the results of every tool, job, or training program.

AN IDEA TO TRY

Make it practical.

Choose a recurring task. Compare time, accuracy, and the amount of correction needed before and after trying AI. Look at who benefits and who needs different support.

A question to consider: Which part of the work is slow because of missing knowledge, and which part needs a better process?
